Position: Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor, Medical services

Dr. SENDEGEYA Augustin is a senior physician and healthcare executive with extensive experience in hospital leadership, clinical governance, and health system management, with a strong focus on advancing quality healthcare delivery, medical education, and institutional performance. He is currently serving as Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor in Charge of Medical Services at AHSU and has been the Chief Medical Officer at King Faisal Hospital since July 2021.

Before his tenure at King Faisal Hospital, Dr. SENDEGEYA Augustin served as the Director General of CHUB (Butare University Teaching Hospital) from June 2013 to 2021. He also pursued ENT residency training in South Africa, which strengthened his clinical specialization and enhanced his expertise in otolaryngology practice.

Dr. Sendegeya’s career has been marked by a focus on strategic leadership and quality improvement, with a particular emphasis on ensuring that patient safety and care standards are continuously met or exceeded. His leadership roles at both King Faisal Hospital and CHUB have provided him with a broad understanding of hospital administration, medical management, and the implementation of health policies designed to enhance the overall healthcare experience for both patients and medical staff.

Over the course of his professional career and contribution to the science, he has authored and co-authored 27 publications across various critical areas of community health and healthcare services, reflecting his strong commitment to research and evidence-based practice in Rwanda and beyond.

In addition to his leadership roles, Dr. Sendegeya is deeply invested in advancing medical education and fostering professional development within healthcare teams. He has made significant contributions to the mentorship of young health professionals through clinical practice, leadership, and capacity-building initiatives. Through his continuous engagement, he has also inspired many emerging healthcare professionals, shaping their growth and commitment to healthcare services and medical education. His vision is to cultivate an environment where clinicians are empowered to collaborate, innovate, and improve patient outcomes across diverse medical disciplines.

As Chief Medical Officer at King Faisal Hospital, he oversees the integration of advanced medical technologies and clinical processes aimed at strengthening the hospital’s capacity to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care. He is committed to continuous professional development, ensuring that both the institution and its staff remain aligned with current medical advancements and uphold standards of innovation and patient-centered care.

Dr. Sendegeya’s extensive experience, both in clinical practice and hospital administration, positions him in Rwanda’s healthcare landscape, where he is recognized for his contributions to improving the overall quality of medical services.

Now as Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor in Charge of Medical Services at AHSU, where he provides strategic leadership in advancing medical education, clinical training, research, and healthcare service excellence within the institution.
