AHSU Basic Emergency Care (BEC) course launch in Rwanda

We are proud to announce that Africa Health Sciences University (AHSU) has launched the implementation of the Basic Emergency Care (BEC) Course across all district hospitals and medicalized health centers in Rwanda.

This rollout is the result of the Ministry of Health’s investment and priority on emergency care systems, along with partners supporting this work, including the World Health Organization and Laerdal Global Health. In collaboration with the Rwanda Emergency Care Association (RECA), AHSU will train frontline emergency care workers in hospitals where emergency care is needed most.

BEC equips health workers with the core skills to recognize and manage time-sensitive emergencies, from trauma to sepsis to acute respiratory distress, using a structured, low-resource approach that has already shown impact across multiple countries.

This launch is also part of a broader multi-country effort, under the Acute Care Transformation (ACT) initiative, to systematically assess clinical outcomes following BEC training and generate the evidence needed to guide emergency care scale-up across the region. Data collection will commence this month, and all hospitals will receive training over the course of the implementation.

We look forward to sharing outcomes as implementation progresses, and to continuing to build solutions to strengthen emergency care systems.
