Residency program details

Residency training at AHSU is delivered through a network of teaching hospitals and referral sites, offering residents broad exposure to a wide range of clinical settings and patient needs. The Residency programme is strengthened by structured mentorship, research opportunities, leadership development, and career support throughout the course of training.

Residents are guided in key areas such as clinical growth, teaching and supervision, scholarship, ethics, professionalism, and preparation for future subspecialty pathways. This approach helps shape well-rounded specialists who are prepared to contribute as clinicians, educators, researchers, and leaders.

AHSU’s Master of Medicine programmes use a competency-based assessment model. Progression is determined by demonstrated competence, professional conduct, completion of clinical requirements, and satisfactory performance in workplace-based assessments, e-logbooks, written examinations, and practical examinations (OSCE). This model supports patient safety, continuous improvement, and fair, evidence-informed progression decisions.

Beyond training within Rwanda, AHSU is also developing opportunities for selected international rotations through partner institutions abroad. Residents may also benefit from observership opportunities in different countries, allowing them to broaden their perspective, learn from other health systems, and gain exposure to diverse specialist practices and clinical environments.
