Position: PGME Chair
Dr. Gaston Nyirigira, MD, MMed, FCA (ECSA), is the Chair of Postgraduate Medical Education and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Africa Health Sciences University. He is a Senior Consultant Anesthesiologist at King Faisal Hospital, Rwanda, and a distinguished academic leader in postgraduate training, curriculum development, research, and clinical education.
He is a Knowledge Translation in Pain and Research expert, with research interests focused on pain management, perioperative care, medical education, simulation-based training, burnout and wellbeing, and health systems strengthening in low- and middle-income countries. He is the recipient of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) Award for Excellence in
Pain Research and Management in Developing Countries, reflecting his significant contributions to advancing pain care in resource-limited settings.
Dr. Nyirigira holds several prominent national and international leadership roles, chairing and contributing to multiple key organizations and working groups in anesthesia, pain medicine, and global health. Through this work, he continues to advance academic excellence, innovation, and patient-centered healthcare education across Africa and beyond.
