A warm start to the journey

Induction is more than an introduction to timetables and campus facilities. It is the moment new students meet their classmates, faculty and mentors, and begin to understand the values that shape life at AHSU: compassion, excellence and a commitment to serving communities.

AHSU Cohort 3 induction session

For many of our midwifery students and residents, this marks a major step toward their professional goals. For the MSc in Cardiovascular Perfusion, it is a historic milestone, as AHSU welcomes the very first students into this specialized program.

AHSU Launches Basic Emergency Care (BEC) Course Across Rwanda’s District Hospitals https://ahsu.ac.rw/ahsu-launches-basic-emergency-care-bec-course-across-rwandas-district-hospitals/ https://ahsu.ac.rw/ahsu-launches-basic-emergency-care-bec-course-across-rwandas-district-hospitals/#respond Sun, 04 Oct 2026 02:35:13 +0000 https://ahsu.ac.rw/?p=13896 We are proud to announce that Africa Health Sciences University (AHSU) has launched the implementation of the Basic Emergency Care (BEC) Course across all district hospitals and medicalized health centers in Rwanda.

This rollout is the result of the Ministry of Health’s investment and priority on emergency care systems, along with partners supporting this work, including the World Health Organization and Laerdal Global Health. In collaboration with the Rwanda Emergency Care Association (RECA), AHSU will train frontline emergency care workers in hospitals where emergency care is needed most.

AHSU Basic Emergency Care (BEC) course launch in Rwanda

BEC equips health workers with the core skills to recognize and manage time-sensitive emergencies, from trauma to sepsis to acute respiratory distress, using a structured, low-resource approach that has already shown impact across multiple countries.

This launch is also part of a broader multi-country effort, under the Acute Care Transformation (ACT) initiative, to systematically assess clinical outcomes following BEC training and generate the evidence needed to guide emergency care scale-up across the region. Data collection will commence this month, and all hospitals will receive training over the course of the implementation.

We look forward to sharing outcomes as implementation progresses, and to continuing to build solutions to strengthen emergency care systems.

This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Health’s 4X4 reform, which aim to quadruple the number of professionals in the healthcare sector.

In this context, the hospital has launched the university in line with Ministerial Order No. 001/MINEDUC/2024, dated April 26, 2024, which authorized AHSU to begin operations and granted it legal status. The order specified that AHSU is permitted to offer Master’s degree programs in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics.

Additionally, AHSU will provide courses in the fields of pharmacy, nursing, midwifery, radiography, and laboratory sciences. The university has started by offering the Bachelor of Science in midwifery course initially enrolling 40 learners selected from1423 applications (2.3% acceptance rate for the midwifery program).

This opportunity is highly advantageous for the selected learners, as they will receive full scholarships, accommodation, and stipends during the course of their studies. The selection process prioritized learners who excelled in high school exams, particularly in biology.
