Position: Dean, School of Midwifery and Nursing
Dr Baloyi holds a PhD in Nursing from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as MSc and BSc degrees in Nursing, and postgraduate diplomas in Nursing Education, Advanced Midwifery and Neonatology from the University of the Witwatersrand. She is also a certified assessor and moderator.
With over two decades of experience in midwifery education and clinical practice, she has extensive experience teaching midwifery at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is a C2 NRF-rated researcher, widely recognized for developing a clinical reasoning model that enhances higher-order thinking in nursing education.
Her scholarly interests include maternal, child, and neonatal health, antenatal depression, midwifery education, health systems strengthening, and quality of care in low- and middle-income countries. She is well published, with more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and serves as an editorial board member for the African Journal of Nursing and Midwifery (AJNM).
She has successfully supervised numerous Master’s and PhD students and holds the position of Honorary Professor at Walter Sisulu University. She has also examined Master’s and PhD theses and dissertations across Africa. Her academic leadership spans undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum development, examiner roles across Southern Africa, and significant contributions to national and international nursing and midwifery education reforms. She is a curriculum development specialist and has led curriculum development initiatives in several African countries, including Lesotho and South Africa.
Her contributions have been recognized through several honours, including her induction into Sigma Theta Tau International (Tau Lambda Chapter) in 2016 and her selection as a Visiting Scholar at Duke University School of Nursing in 2022. She has also received competitive research funding, including the NRF Thuthuka (Post-PhD) award and the SSAUF nGAP research grant.
She remains committed to advancing nursing and midwifery education through evidence-based teaching, mentorship, and impactful research that addresses real-world health challenges.
