About Africa Health Sciences University
Africa Health Sciences University (AHSU) was established to strengthen health professions education in Rwanda and to contribute to the development of a skilled, compassionate, and future-ready health workforce. Its foundation reflects Rwanda’s national commitment to expanding the health workforce and addressing the growing need for specialized healthcare services under the 4×4 programme.
AHSU was created to provide high-quality education and training in medicine and other health professions within an advanced clinical learning environment. Its purpose is to prepare competent and ethical health professionals who can respond effectively to the evolving health needs of Rwanda, the region, and the wider global community. Since its establishment, the University has continued to strengthen its academic systems, institutional structures, and teaching partnerships, while building a learner-centered environment that promotes education, research, innovation, and service.
AHSU is grounded in the belief that health professions education should be transformative, socially accountable, and closely connected to the realities of the health system. By combining academic excellence with clinical training, ethical leadership, and service, the University aims to make a meaningful contribution to better healthcare outcomes through education.
Our Vision,Missions & Values.
Our Vision
To become a premier institution in health science education, research, and healthcare provision, within Rwanda, Africa and on a broader international scale.
Our Mission
To deliver a comprehensive and exceptional health sciences education that equips healthcare professionals with the values of compassion, competence, and ethical practice.
Our Values
AHSU fosters a culture of excellence, ethics, compassion, collaboration, and lifelong learning, while emphasizing patient-centered, evidence-based, and culturally competent healthcare in all its programs and practices
AHSU recognizes that strong partnerships are central to high-quality health professions education. The University works closely with clinical teaching sites, healthcare institutions, and the Ministry of Health to ensure that training remains practical, relevant, and aligned with national priorities.
With support from the King Faisal Hospital Rwanda Foundation, AHSU has established strong academic and clinical partnerships with key training institutions. King Faisal Hospital Rwanda serves as a major clinical partner, particularly for residency training and core rotations. Additional training partnerships include Kibungo Level II Teaching Hospital, Kibuye Level II Teaching Hospital, Rwanda Military Teaching Hospital, Butaro Level II Teaching Hospital, Inkurunziza Orthopedic Specialized Hospital, Kacyiru District Hospital, Kibagabaga Level II Teaching Hospital, and some health centers in Kigali. These partnerships strengthen hands-on learning and expose midwifery students and residents to diverse healthcare settings and patient populations.
The University continues to expand its teaching and training network in line with its academic growth. Planned collaborations with Rilima Specialized Hospital and Gahini Hospital are intended to support the development of MMed in Orthopedics training. At the same time, AHSU is preparing to launch new academic programs (MMed in Radiology, Fellowship in Family Planning, and Masters of Science in Clinical Perfusion), pending approval by the Higher Education Council (HEC).
Through these partnerships, AHSU is building an integrated model of education that connects classroom learning, clinical training, research, and service to the needs of Rwanda’s health system.
AHSU is committed to high standards in academic quality, institutional governance, and health professions training. The University has received accreditation from the Rwanda Higher Education Council (HEC) and is actively preparing for East African Community (EAC) accreditation. This process is being supported by expert guidance and by dedicated institutional structures, including a Quality Assurance Committee.
AHSU’s approach to quality is reflected in its philosophy, values, teaching, assessment, faculty development, and resident training. It includes alignment with national and regional standards, attention to professionalism and assessment integrity, continuous monitoring and program review, and systems that support accountability, learner welfare, and social responsibility. Through ongoing investment in infrastructure, academic systems, faculty capacity, and partnerships, AHSU continues to strengthen its foundation for long-term excellence.
