📍 Dr. Mekete Wendwosen Asfaw is a Consultant General Surgeon and Assistant Professor of General Surgery with over a decade of clinical, academic, and research experience in East Africa. He currently serves as Head of the Department of Surgery at African Health Sciences University, Kibuye Referral Hospital, Rwanda, where he leads surgical services, residency training, curriculum development, and research initiatives. Dr. Mekete earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Gondar and completed his General Surgery residency at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He previously served as Department Head of Surgery at Wolkite University Specialized Teaching Hospital, Ethiopia, where he played a key role in strengthening surgical education, advancing research, and building institutional capacity. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and an Associate Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (AFCS, ECSA). His professional memberships also include the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), reflecting his commitment to international surgical standards and minimally invasive surgery. His clinical expertise includes general and basic laparoscopic surgery, complex surgical case management, and surgical training in resource-limited settings. Dr. Mekete has authored more than 15 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and has served as Principal Investigator in several studies addressing surgical outcomes, perioperative care, and global surgery in low-resource environments. Dr. Mekete is actively engaged in global surgery initiatives, research mentorship, and professional development programs. He is passionate about advancing surgical innovation, strengthening residency programs, and improving access to safe, high-quality surgical care across sub-Saharan Africa.
