📍 Dr. Gloria Shumbusho is a Consultant in Internal Medicine and Nephrology with extensive experience in clinical care, academic training, and research in kidney diseases. After medical school, she completed her Internal Medicine residency and Nephrology fellowship at the University of Rwanda. She also pursued advanced nephrology training at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and completed one year of training in Epidemiology and Clinical Research at Université de Lorraine, France. She currently serves as an Adult Nephrologist and Kidney Transplant Program Coordinator at King Faisal Hospital, Rwanda (KFHR), the national referral center for transplantation. She is also the Chair of the renal transplantation program in Rwanda. In this role, she plays a central part in coordinating multidisciplinary transplant services, strengthening clinical protocols, and supporting the growth and sustainability of the kidney transplant program. Her work focuses on improving access to transplantation, optimizing patient outcomes, and ensuring adherence to international standards of care. Dr. Shumbusho is also the Internal Medicine Postgraduate Coordinator at Africa Health Sciences University (AHSU), where she oversees postgraduate medical training. Her responsibilities include academic coordination, trainee supervision, and quality assurance, contributing to the advancement of specialist medical education in Rwanda and the region. In addition, she is actively involved in the Internal Medicine and Nephrology Fellowship Program at the University of Rwanda, where she contributes to teaching, supervision, and mentorship, supporting the development of highly skilled specialists. As an emerging clinical researcher, Dr. Shumbusho has a growing academic portfolio with approximately ten peer-reviewed publications, including four as Principal Investigator. Her research interests include chronic kidney disease, dialysis, kidney transplantation, and health systems strengthening in resource-limited settings. She is committed to generating high-quality evidence to inform clinical practice, guide policy, and improve patient health outcomes. Through her leadership experience, she served as Chief Resident at the University of Rwanda during her residency training, demonstrating a sustained commitment to medical education and leadership. She completed the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) Scientific Writing Course in 2025 and has actively participated in and presented at ISN international conferences in 2023, 2025, and 2026. She is an active member of several professional bodies, including the International Society of Nephrology (ISN), the African Association of Nephrology (AFRAN), the Rwanda Medical and Dental Council, the Rwanda College of Physicians, and the Rwanda Renal Organization. She also serves as Treasurer of the Rwanda Renal Organization, contributing to the advancement of kidney care and professional collaboration at the national level. Her professional approach integrates clinical expertise, academic leadership, and research engagement, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based practice and multidisciplinary collaboration. Through her diverse roles, she continues to contribute to the advancement of nephrology, the strengthening of healthcare systems, and the training of future medical specialists in Rwanda.
