📍 Dr. Desire Rubanguka is a Consultant General and Laparoscopic Surgeon with over 18 years of experience in medical practice, clinical leadership, medical education, and research. He currently serves as Head of Surgical Specialized Services Department at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda (KFHR), a position he has held for over five years, providing strategic oversight of surgical sub-specialties and advancing high-quality, patient-centered surgical care. In this leadership role, he has initiated and led the development, implementation, and audit of different departmental policies, clinical guidelines, and surgical protocols aimed at improving quality of care, patient safety, and service efficiency. Dr. Rubanguka is Chair of Surgery at African Health Sciences University and KFHR Program Director within the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA), where he plays a central role in postgraduate surgical training, curriculum development, and regional capacity building. He has supervised and mentored different undergraduate and postgraduate research theses, supporting the development of future surgeons and clinician-scientists. His clinical and academic interests focus on high quality surgical care, competency-based surgical education, simulation training, and research. He has contributed significantly to clinical research and has taken key roles in different peer-reviewed publications, including serving as Site Principal Investigator for clinical trials at KFHR. Dr. Rubanguka is also a Health Professions Education candidate, reflecting his commitment to advancing excellence in surgical training, academic leadership, and evidence-based surgical practice across the region.
